About Richard Stewart

I’d like to think that I’m the one who pursued photography. Instead, it captured me thanks to the marvels of the smartphone. Because of the ease of taking and editing high-resolution images with a modern-day camera that lives in our pockets, I was not only spellbound, but consumed. The ability to create art in the palm of one’s hand rekindled an interest that had laid dormant for years.

Opportunity is my calling card when it comes to capturing images. My visual expression is composed of a wide range of objects as well as experiences and interactions with nature and the environment at large. My imagery revolves around lines, shapes, symmetry, angles, perspective, shadows, space, patterns etc.

Although unconfined to a specific tonal range, I’m drawn to monochrome. I love the use of black and white to create images with contrast, subtlety, mood, artfulness, and abstraction. To me, monochrome photography lends itself to interpretation and instills a timeless and iconic quality to its subjects.

Regardless of tone, photographic art engages my mind and quickens my spirit; and I believe it is imbued with potential to transcend that which only our senses perceive.
