The morning drive to my treasured lookout was an exercise of hopeful expectation. It had frozen the night before and the winding roads that took me around the lake required caution—but my eyes kept drifting to the eastern sky in search of color and to estimate my timing until sunrise. Finally in place, I set up…noticing that horizontal clouds were forming in the distance. Golden sunlight caught and filled them like sails on a ship, transforming the scene below. I snapped away, trying to capture every little moment. This image, of Fannette Island, is one of my favorites.
